Micki Colquhoun brings tremendous grace and a wealth of life experience to her real estate clients. She's personable, social and very available, but she's also an energetic researcher who enjoys number-crunching and market analysis.
"For most people, a house is their biggest investment, period." she says. "I can't say, 'this is the house for you,' but what I can help with is whether the move they're considering makes sense financially. If you can put a property into context, in terms of where the market is, and of what is distinctive about that property … if you can assign some numerical values to those factors, it helps people make decisions."
Her clients marvel at her energy as well. "She's gung-ho from the start, really motivated, and she works so hard. She really listens to what you're looking for," said one woman recently.
After earning a master's degree in business administration, Micki worked on Wall Street for fifteen years before moving to Castine, Maine in the late 1980s. She then used her finance background working for the Eastern Maine Development Corporation, teaching at Maine Maritime Academy, and as administrator at her children's school. The town seemed quiet after their children left home, and she and her husband, artist Jeff Colquhoun, moved to Camden in 1999.
"It's such an easy place to move into compared to almost any place else on the Maine Coast. You can move in here, and people are happy to meet you. They are so welcoming of new people here," she says.
Micki began selling real estate in 2001, and since then she's carved out a reputation for excellence, having been top producer at her previous firm during her first two years in the business. "I love putting transactions together. And what I've found is, there's a way to do it where essentially everyone gets what they want, and they feel good about it."
Micki had no intention of changing firms when Camden Real Estate president Scott Horty called her. "I said, 'I'm not moving, but I'd be happy to talk with you.' By the end of the conversation I thought, that's how I'd run a real estate agency. It's the approach taken to presenting a property; it's the culture of teamwork in the organization. And because it's a small agency, it's flexible, responsive, and you have a sense of what's going on. Great surroundings too."
For Micki, this is the best of all possible worlds. "For us, part of the move to Maine was to lead a considered life. I happen to love doing real estate, but other things are important too … family, and having memorable experiences. When you look back at your life, that's your treasure."
